Martin “Marty” “Butch” Stearns, 90, of Lincolnwood Healthcare Center in North Providence, RI and formerly Kentland Ave. in Providence, RI, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025 surrounded by his family at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was the husband of the late Eileen O. Stearns.

Born in Providence, RI, he was the beloved son of the late Flora M. (Barstow) Stearns and Frank Stearns. Marty graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and was on the football team. After high school he immediately joined the service and enlisted in January 1954 in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Korea. He proudly served our country for 8 yearsand had advanced to a position of Corporal.

He worked all his life for the H.P. Hood & Sons Company as a truck driver delivering ice cream all over the state to very happy customers. He loved his job and co-workers, many of which became his longtime friends. He met his wife to be there, Eileen Oliver, who also was employed by the company. He and his wife were also both active communicants of St. Augustine’s Church.

Over the years he loved traveling to Florida to spent vacation time in the family home in Boca Raton and sitting out in the hot sun until he looked like a red lobster. He really enjoyed going to the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, visiting his sister Carol and his nieces and nephews and betting on the horses. He was an avid sports fan, loved playing golf, cards and shooting pool. He loved stopping by to visit people, especially his sister, Honey, to have a coffee and chat about everyone’s activities. Marty had a lot of friends and really looked forward to “going out for a few sodas” with the guys! He was a man who everyone really liked.

Marty was the very cherished brother of Carol (Stearns) McCarty of Louisville, KY, Claire “Honey” (Stearns) Travisono of Providence, RI and the late June J. Stearns and the late Hope (Stearns) Babin. He was the favorite of all of his siblings! He also leaves many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews and a few old friends from the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.

He had that very strong grasp that Marines have when he shook your hand to say hello or goodbye, he was always interested in what you had to say, and he would always close with a big smile and say…  “God Bless, the Best!”

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Friday January 24th at 11am in St. Augustine Church 639 Mt Pleasant Avenue Providence followed by interment with Military Honors in Pocasett Cemetery 417 Dyer Street Cranston.

A visitation will be held Friday from 9-1030am in the Skeffington Funeral Home and Cremations, 925 Chalkstone Avenue Providence.
